Oh, screw that. Holy...just...STOP....DROP! Jump! Click! Collectors!! Lovers! Hedonists! Syrah freaks! LA CHAPELLE, 98-100 POINTS Wine Advocate, priced ONLY as Last Bottle manipulating the space/time continuum can do!
This is a 101% red alert situation, guys, please -- your consiglieri in everything regarding rare vinous matters is begging you! Simply breathtaking wine --- a cellar centerpiece that your grandchildren can drink if you can keep YOUR hands off of it (hint: you can’t, we know, ‘cause we drank 2 bottles last night and OMG, so over the top outrageously delicious and fine and mind-bending).
SO - Jaboulet. We visited the winery in the hamlet of Hermitage back in 2019, and the fruits of that labor are being harvested, as this masterpiece got unloaded from the truck this week. Any hardcore wine geek will tell you the 1961 Jaboulet La Chapelle is one of the greatest wines ever made, anywhere, and Jaboulet is back, baby, at the top AGAIN.
This is syrah, of course, from one of the greatest terroirs on earth for the grape, and La Chapelle is the king (there is an ancient chapel on the spot, built circa 1000AD, where it was used by hermits between the 16th through 18th century. The history is fascinating, Google it). The Jaboulet family owned the land for over 200 years. It is magical juice. This wine has a pretty UNREAL level of extraction and depth, yet has an ethereal-ness to it --- that magical balance that is so thrilling in great wine. Simply orgasmic levels of flavor and liquid minerality, savoriness for days, deep blue fruits and again, that terrific, spellbinding, breathless balance.
BEST DAY EVER!!
Mention the Rhône Valley to anyone around the world and a small chapel perched upon a vine clad hill is likely to be one of the first images that springs to mind. Not only is the image romantic, it is so closely associated with being one of the best Syrahs in the world, it evokes a myriad of emotions – admiration, respect, envy and desire. Winemakers around the globe aspire to make Syrahs of this complexity and intensity, such is the reverence in which it is held. La Chapelle in Hermitage is one of the finest and most iconic vineyards in the world. It belongs to Paul Jaboulet Aîné.
