Mount Langi Ghiran Shiraz Cliff Edge Grampians Victoria 2019
Party a bit too much last night? Looking for a pick-me-up this Saturday morning? I got you, boo! How’s this? 95 POINTS on a $16 BEAST from the land of OZ!!! That’ll get the synapses firing!
Yeeeessss! Gotta jog around the empty weekend warehouse and eat a few raw eggs while blasting Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger!! PEOPLE – my favorite people…surely you remember Mount Langi Ghiran? And their fantastic Cliff Edge single vineyard bottling?! That cool Victoria climate, and monumental producer, with a 100% SHIRAZ miracle of vinous value?!?! Of course you do!
BUT… just in case you don’t…let me just say…this is NOT for the faint of heart. It’s BIG and polished, but oh-so-fresh and complex, too – completely different from the gnarly inky Alien/Predator-style beasts of the past – more like if Bordeaux made shiraz…purple, yes, purple, like if you could soak in a tubful of purple – violets, plums, purple berries (this is real if you read Willy Wonka), lavender, figs, acai berries, and then you get the SPICES, beautifully-done licorice, and black tea, cardamom (I love me some cardamom when done right), and a bit of clove…just one of the best BANG for your buck Aussie shiraz we’ve ever had and a pure, straight-up, no hanky-panky, MIND-RATTLING hyper-deal! We bought every bottle we could scrounge out of the winery in beautiful, stunning Victoria (near Melbourne and the Grampians National Park, oh man, someday we’ll actually visit…).
This is one of the greats, in our view, and a wine we’ve been selling on and off for like 375 years (OK, 1996 or so), and gotta tell ya – our price is ridonkulous. Did I mention 95 POINTS??! Ok, good. You know what to do, party people. While it lasts!
The Mount Langi Ghiran vineyard stands as a truly exceptional site, boasting the renowned Old Block responsible for crafting one of Australia's most distinguished wines—the Langi Shiraz. While the dominant variety is Shiraz, the 70-hectare vineyard also cultivates a diverse array of red grapes, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, Barbera, Grenache, and more. Situated in one of Australia's most isolated regions, the vineyard's distinctiveness emerges from a combination of factors: the weathered granite cliff face, sedimentary soils, cold winds from the Southern Ocean, and historic vine stock. These elements collaborate harmoniously to yield the unique and flavorful wines that characterize Mount Langi Ghiran.

About The Producer
Nestled in the breathtaking Grampians region of Victoria, Mount Langi Ghiran, meaning "home of the yellow-tailed black cockatoo" in Aboriginal boasts a rich history dating back to the late 1800s. Originally planted with vines just in the Contour Block, it was the visionary Fratin brothers – Don, Lino, and Serge – who redefined the vineyard in 1969, realizing their dream of creating a slice of Veneto in Australia. Their iconic "Langi" Old Block Shiraz, planted alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, marked a significant chapter. A setback in the 1980 vintage led them to consultant Trevor Mast, a pivotal figure in the winery's history. Six years later, Trevor, along with his wife Sandra and Ian Menzies, took ownership, ushering in a new era highlighted by the visionary Langi Shiraz, a testament to their foresight in cool-climate winemaking.
