Lutum Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills 2015 - Last Bottle

Lutum Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills 2015

PULL OVER, freeze whatever you’re doing, GET OUT of that meeting, stop, drop, roll to your phone for what is quite possibly the MOST INSANE deal we have EVER put together. If you LOVE lush, finesse-filled, 96-POINT (from Vinous no less!!) single-vineyard (Sanford & Benedict!!) Pinot Noir, it is imperative that you apply every ounce of energy to GETTING THIS. Now! Seriously!

Hope that was urgent enough. Hey, we do this for you -- killer pinot is a MUST in every home as far as we’re concerned. OK --- here’s the scoop. It’s a long one! Go get some and read this later!!

You saw this was a 96-point pinot, right? And saw our price?? LUTUM is one of the wineries run by the intrepid and brilliant Bill Price, with rockstar winemaker Gavin Chanin (just Google the press on his wines on top of what he does at Lutum!). Bill Price owns Three Sticks, Head High (a Last Bottle client all-time fave if there ever was one…!) and he is an investor/owner in such glorious vineyards as Durell, Gap’s Crown and many others, and also has active interests in Kistler Vineyards and Gary Farrell wineries. This guy does NOT mess around! THE BEST!

Lutum is being disbanded to focus more on the Three Sticks and Chanin brands. We, due to our dashing good looks of course, were able to secure the remaining inventory, and, kids, these are drop-dead fabulous, sexy, concentrated, silky wines.

SO! We start this delectable acquisition off with the 96-point Sanford & Benedict (from vines planted in 1971!!). Buy as much as you can. We’ll simply quote Vinous, because they said it best…”Rich and pliant yet also wonderfully light on its feet, the Sanford & Benedict is head-turner. The flavors are intense, but also remarkably pure, especially for a wine of this size. A rush of violet, lavender and mint punctuates the exuberant finish. If you can find it, don't miss it.” At our price..well, you know what to do. Will go in a flash!

Lastly, as we tra-la-la off into the warehouse to start packing boxes for you (you will want to drink this the moment it arrives, so you can say “shoulda got more…”), here are winemaker Gavin Chanin’s notes, just for another data point for ya….

2015 Sanford & Benedict Pinot is a concentrated wine. As I sat down to write tasting notes about this wine I couldn’t decide whether the wine was powerful or elegant – and after a couple of glasses I think it’s a balance of both. The nose is bramble with raspberries and blackberries being most apparent. There are touches of rose and white pepper that give this wine stunning complexity and push it more towards old world complexities that I’m used to seeing in Burgundy. The same power and elegance is echoed on the palate with fine tannin and fantastic concentration. This wine is a perfect example of the complexities of old vines (planted 1971) from one of the best vineyard sites in Santa Barbara County.

Sanford & Benedict Vineyard is one of the oldest vineyards in Santa Barbara County (planted in 1971), located in the famed Sta. Rita Hills. The grapes were harvested on August 15th, 19th. At the winery, the grapes were destemmed and underwent a four-day cold-soak prior to fermentation. The wine was then gently pressed and put into French oak barrels where it stayed for 18 months before being bottled in March 2017.

About The Producer

LUTUM was born from a shared vision between Bill Price, entrepreneur and owner Price Family Vineyards, and winemaker Gavin Chanin. Their wine focuses on small-production, single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from prime vineyard sites in California. The name LUTUM is Latin for dirt or soil, referencing their mission to make wines that express these great sites, with little to mask the vineyards’ natural character. Together, they are the Bards of LUTUM.
