Domaine de Poulvarel Costieres de Nimes Gres 2016 - Last Bottle

Domaine de Poulvarel Costieres de Nimes Gres 2016

When ya know, ya know. Savvy longtime Last Bottle hipsters will already be flying to grab this (by now) well-known uber-overdeliverer at our drop-dead amazing price (not to mention 90 POINTS Wine Advocate, yeah….) -- we get less every year so gotta go go move go….

At an astounding ELEVEN dollars of cold hard American cash, we’d normally call this a !! PORCH-POUNDER !! offer or some such but frankly….even at $11 this is WAY too serious of a deep, dark red to be referred to so casually. Costieres de Nimes is in the Rhone, not far from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, near the famous Roman aqueduct called the Pont Du Gard  built in the 1st century AD. There is truly some Roman magic dust in these minerally, pure, meaty, silky wines, and Poulvarel remains one of our all-time great finds since we started this whole gig up in 2011. Those who know….KNOW!

To the delicious 2016 (yes, we’re going to remind again you what a fantastic vintage this is…)! AHHH...This is along the lines of a complex Cotes du Rhone, but Poulvarel always captures the wind and the flora of the place with sweet herbs, raspberry liqueur, crushed fresh raspberries, and a sweet, savory note. Very light on its feet, too, not a heavy wine but one filled with energy and tangy savoriness and lip-smacking freshness. 90 points to boot! You saw that price, right?? We bought all we could…

The Domaine de Poulvarel in Sernhac, near the Pont du Gard is a family vineyard cultivated with passion for several generations. This vineyard of the Rhone Valley, offers tastings of rosé, white and red wines in Costières de Nîmes and Vins de Pays appellation.

About The Producer

It is impossible to separate the Poulvarel Estate from Elisabeth and Pascal Glas. And for good reason, in 2004, while Pascal worked in wine estates for 25 years, they decided to create their own winery on family lands.

What seemed like a crazy bet at that moment, is now a well defended bet. The vintages of the estate are among the "award-winning" wines of the region and are "noticed" by the specialized press. Pascal passed on his passion for wine to Elisabeth and together they had the audacity to launch and the will to continue. They have united their strength, their differences, their know-how and now offer wines worthy of the best tables.
