Bodegas y Vinedos San Roman Toro 2015

Looking for an easygoing, hey-how-are-ya red? Then read no further -- go about your business.

But...if you’re feeling a little saucy, looking for something a little hedonistic, a little heart-pounding, a bit of a, shall we say, lusty, strapping BEAST of a Spanish red (WA93, and with a brand new Wine Spectator 93 POINTS no less!) --- HERE. YOU. ARE!!

The new vintage of San Roman is HUGE! Dark, and warm and bubbling with fresh baked berries, pie crust, licorice, generous toasty French and American oak (30% American), chocolate milk and big, generous, mouthcoating texture. WOW! It’s ALL that. Sourced from old, head-pruned vines in the hot and dry Toro region of Spain, this wine just blows critics away year after year. It’s a great wine at the normal $65 price, but at OURS?! C’mon! BOOM!

Not for the shy, did we say that? Also not for the slow-to-get-around-to-things --- we get a little less every year, despite our lamentations and protestations! While it lasts…!

The San Roman is a profound wine that combines power and elegance, has civilized tannins and a dense mouthfeel, with crisp flavors of black fruit. Fascinating and expressive aromas, full of fruit. Succulent, fine, compelling.

About The Producer

Mariano Garcia started Bodegas Maurodos in 1995. His sons now help run things - Alberto (management) and Eduardo (winemaking and vineyard care). San Roman has 130 hectares planted to mostly Tinta de Toro and Garnacha. The vineyards average 35 years of age. The soils are loose, stony or sandy depending on the areas as with clay subsoil where the plant can obtain water in times of drought. The varieties and plots are vinified separately to respect the characteristics of the different vineyards. Wines are structured and elegant, balanced, with refined tannins and deep minerality.
