Domaine Serguier Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2020
Nothing to see here, folks...just move along...
Unless. UNLESS...you want a top-notch, seriously dreamy, ancient vine, rip-roaringly delish CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE!!! For UNDER $30!!! 92 POINTS, too! Who’s with me?!?! The new release from our (and your) beloved Serguier is HERE, and...at the risk of sounding overly hyperbolic (what, me?) this is the BEST vintage yet of this outstanding, always over-delivering cuvee!!!
So...SILKY! Makes those $ 140-a-set bamboo sheets at Costco feel like sandpaper! And the PRICE! Serguier’s signature style is in full effect in this one, with all the cherries sweet herbs, and toasted peppercorn going on. We were a little reluctant to even send an email out on this, as there is so little, but...man, CHATEAUNEUF from grenache vines up to 100 years old! Gotta get the good stuff while we have it in-house – especially when we snag it at jaw-dropping prices like this!!
Daniel and Aurélie are just the BEST! They have the most incredible tiny winery underneath the historic cobblestone streets of Châteauneuf itself! The family plots go back over 4 generations and over 100 years – and up until the mid-90s – all the fruit was sold to the revered Pierre Usseglio! Les Terres Blanches, Le Pointu, Le Pialons – these notable plots now combine to create a gorgeous mosaic of flavors that simply scream CdP!!! Ripe black cherries, crushed raspberries, kirsch, white pepper, dried violets, garrigue, pomegranate, red currants, chocolate shavings, black truffles, sweet anise…how do they do it? Juicy yet exceptionally balanced, warm and soulful, and absolutely seamless from start to finish – this is a drink-me-up wine that I absolutely LOVE to death! And not just because Daniel and Aurélie fed me a never-ending platter of the freshest black truffles I have ever seen, with creamy golden butter and freshly baked baguettes, either… though that certainly made for a memorable morning! This was one of the highlights of my trip to Châteauneuf a few months back… and this wine is simply RIDICULOUS. So very delicious…at a price that will surely FLY!
While it lasts!
Situated within the esteemed AOC Châteauneuf du Pape appellation, spanning 3,200 hectares and five picturesque Provençal communes along the right bank of the Rhône River, this region's wine heritage is intimately tied to the Popes of the 14th century, who recognized its unique terroir and even made it their summer residence, granting Châteauneuf du Pape wines "Papal Wine status." In the late 18th century, Châteauneuf-du-Pape winemakers transitioned from shipping their wines in barrels to bottles, earning the appellation a formidable reputation throughout Europe. Pioneering the AOC system in 1936, Châteauneuf du Pape winemakers were the first to adopt stringent production regulations. Recognizable by their bottles adorned with the papal coat of arms, a symbol created in 1937, these wines guarantee their origin and promote the appellation.

About The Producer
Domaine Serguier has roots that date back to the late 19th century and was initially founded by Hippolyte Serguier. Today, in its fourth generation, Daniel Nury and his wife Aurélie oversee the estate, directing operations from an intimate tasting room nestled in the heart of Chateauneuf. This charming space is intimately connected to a subterranean cave where upcoming vintages are meticulously vinified under Daniel's watchful eye. In 1997, Daniel assumed control of the estate, initially supplying grapes to Pierre Usseglio until their contract concluded, enabling them to utilize the fruit from their 7.2-hectare Chateauneuf vineyard to craft their own wines. In 2015, Aurélie joined the family enterprise, and their expansion into the Côtes du Rhône and Lirac appellations extended the vineyard to 12 hectares. With each family member contributing, they continue to create wines that honor tradition and reflect their commitment to quality winemaking. Typically, the grapes undergo destemming and then age in a combination of predominantly used French oak barrels, with approximately 30% in new French oak. Domaine Serguier's wines are enjoyable in their youth but truly shine after 3-5 years of aging, and outstanding vintages can gracefully age for over a decade.
