AHHH. Contentment. Gotta love mornings that start with 2 glasses of bargain-priced red magic juice and pedal-to-the-metal tunes. Let’s address them, aye? MONT THABOR (this property was once a mystical retreat in the 1800s, which we think explains the TRUE brilliance and magic, oooh la la) is from the fantastic 2019 vintage in the Rhone, made from 80% 45-yr-old grenache, and a bit of cinsault and mourvedre, this is the Lennon of the two, maybe, with complexity and depth and brain-bubbling cherry, licorice, kirsch, thyme, plums, mulling spices, on the more intellectual and elegant side...perfect. On the McCartney end of the vinous spectrum, we have the luscious La Joie de Mon Pere ("My Father’s Joy") from the beloved DOMAINE SERGUIER —  a black cherry, strawberry jam and sweet-anise packed glass of joy from 80% old-vine grenache grapes and 20% syrah, and it sings with gutsy, happy, keep-on-coming-back-for-more generosity. Round and bright and rich. YUP. Best day ever.

We had, well, not enough of either to send out an email, so we combo-d ‘em up for ya. Hella-limited, though - while it lasts!

Fun fact: Daniel Stehelin, who we hiked up Mount Ventoux with on our first visit there years ago (he is a serious mountaineer when not making wine), is generally considered to have the finest mustache in all of the southern Rhone.

Château Mont-Thabor- The name “Mont Tabor” comes from one of the most famous mountains in Galilee Israel. In 1881 owner Daniel Stehelin's great uncle, Fritz Stehelin, bought the estate, consisting of a beautiful old French farmhouse with an adjacent stable which he immediately converted into a proper winemaking cellar. Then in 1940 Luc Stehelin took over from Fritz, and succeeded in planting new vines in the Cotes du Rhone. Daniel took over in 1977, and today it still remains a family affair, with his daughter helping him on the side.

Domaine Serguier- The Serguier estate was established in the late 19th century by Hippolyte Serguier who later passed it on to his sons, one of whom was Gaston Serguier. It later passed to Gaston’s grandson. Daniel took over the estate in 1997 – almost 100 years after its founder.

About The Producer

CMT- Château Mont-Thabor. The name Mont Thabor was given to the Chateau by a mystic monk, Don Pernety, who was a founder of a Catholic cult and a seeker after the magical "philosopher's stone'. He had brought from Israel's holy Mont Thabor a seedling tree. Once planted, he chose to name the Chateau Mont Thabor. After the agitations of the French Revolution, it all passed from the Church into private hands. In 1840 a certain Mr. Poulain acquired the property and transformed it into a "Relais de Poste'" where the stagecoaches carrying mail and the carriages bearing private citizens could stop for the night to rest. The eccentric and romantic Mr. Poulain was buried on the property and the heart of his mistress was placed in his casket. We presume that his passing was due to the grief caused by the death of his lover. Chateau Mont Thabor is owned and managed by Daniel Stehlin today. Daniel Stehlin owns more than Mont Thabor.

DS- Daniel’s wife Aurélie joined the family business in 2015. The acquisition of vines in the Côtes du Rhône and Lirac appellations extended the vineyard, taking the area of the estate to 12 hectares. All members of the family are involved in this new project, creating wines which reflect  tradition.
