Failla Wines Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2013

"Simply put, Failla is a reference point winery for the Sonoma Coast. This is as good as it gets." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Every day this week has been unimaginable absurdity in the wine world. Today is another (93 POINTS!!) --- a cranium-cracking good wine from Ehren Jordan (ex-longtime winemaker at Turley Cellars for 20 years, Failla is his own brand with his wife) and a follow-up to the utterly killer Pinot Noir we did from him a month back or so. A SENSATIONAL buy.

** If rich, finely tuned, creamy but not necessarily "buttery" Chardonnay is your thing, we think you should move on this like kids in a candy store. We did. **

Like yesterday’s blockbuster deal from Joey Wagner, this is a wine to drink the moment it hits your desk or porch. Here’s what the pros say: "In this crisp, tangy white from a cool-climate home, tangerine and pineapple play off each other around a fluffy backbone and structured minerality. More of that tang comes to the fore on the finish, this being a bang-for-your-buck kind of wine that will delight at the dinner table or in the kitchen while cooking."

Ha ha! We like the cooking part, that bottle would never make it to the actual dinner table, it’s too good --- you’ll just open another and at this price, why the heck not? Madness. Anyway -- expect tons of creamy citrus, warm caramel, balanced with good acidity and a long, creme brulee-ish finish. Did we mention 93 POINTS? While it lasts…!

Introduced to the secrets of the Sonoma Coast in 1994, Ehren spent a full year noting the area's climate idiosyncrasies, soil elements, and coastal influences.  Its steep hillsides, rocky soil, and cool temperatures made it an ideal location for cool climate varietals.  To date, Ehren has cultivated 14-acres of land on our Estate Vineyard in Cazadero as well as relationships with some of the region's top grape growers.

Tasting Notes: Aromatically the 2013 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay contains a bright and lively mix of lemon

verbena, orange blossom and toasted hazelnuts. The flinty palate is bright and textured

balancing notes of toasted walnuts, fennel and chiseled minerality.

About The Producer

While the history of Failla (pronounced FAY-LA) is short, it is not without its complexities - our first vintage release was as Failla-Jordan in 1998.  That year, Failla's first release of Alban Vineyard Viognier (Edna Valley) and Que Syrah Syrah (Sonoma Coast) coincided with planting the first blocks at our Estate Vineyard in Cazadero.  The first Estate releases would be several years away.
