Bodega Lanzaga Lanzaga Rioja 2014
WARNING! Attention-grabbing, sit-up-in-chair headline approaching!
96-POINT RIOJA --- FOR $25!!
Did that grab you? Well, we can tell you when we tasted it, it grabbed us like a kid at Christmas who just got a sweet new BMX bike. And when we negotiated the price? Champagne all around!
All blowhardiness aside, this is truly an astounding little score. Based in the Alavesa village of Lantziego, the Telmo Rodriguez fronted Bodegas Lanzaga is on a tear of late, arguably producing some of the most important, thought provoking and region redefining wines in Spain's most consequential wine region, Rioja. The wine is actually a traditional field blend of old vine Tempranillo and other varietals, made very traditionally and SINGING with beautiful balance, savory spices and deep, dark, meaty fruit flavor. Teriyaki, toasted herbs, toast and lovely sexiness round it all out --- so SO good!! Did we mention 96 points?
Winemaker Telmo Rodriguez is a legend in this part of Spain -- read a bit about him here, if you like. BUT --- if you read this far, this wine might be gone. $25! Go get it and drink like a rockstar all through the fall season!
“Rioja was always a field blend” -Telmo Rodriguez
Based in the Alavesa village of Lantziego, the Telmo Rodriguez fronted Bodegas Lanzaga is on a tear of late, arguably producing some of the most important, thought provoking and region re-defining wines in Spain's most consequential wine region, Rioja. This bottling opens with savory and spicy, muscular dark cherry, plum and cumin aromas, which lead to a structured, fresh, serious palate. Impressive stuff.
Lanzaga is the backbone of our project, the identity, the purest
expression of our work in Lanciego. Made only from a selection
of the best grapes from our own organic vineyards, Lanzaga
brings together all the elements of our way of work; respect of
the place, field blend, bush pruning, organic viticulture, aging in
foudres and barrels of different sizes and origins, keeping always
a limited production of human size. The result is a rich and
complex expression of the village of Lanciego; a Rioja wine with
a true sense of place; a serious and sophisticated wine that ages
wonderfully.

About The Producer
Situated at the base of Sierra de Cantabria, where the Mediterranean and Atlantic climates meet, the village of Lanciego has the pro?le that Telmo and Pablo have wanted to show for years, a story they wanted to tell and taste. Since 1998, when they bottled and made their ?rst vintage in Lanciego, they have only continued to learn from the village, the vineyards and the grapes. Above all, they have learned from those who came before them; they are their directors, their guides. Which varieties, long forgotten, did they use in their ?eld blends? How did they plant their vineyards - at what density and on what scale?, And how did they ferment and age their wine… such are the questions being asked. Now, with the current vintages, Pablo and Telmo want to share their answers. Their work is not complete, of course - learning is a continual process - but they believe the elements are all there, maturing, becoming something exceptional. LZ, Lanzaga, and the single vineyard wines, El Velado and La Estrada, are reflections of the remarkable taste of this village in Rioja, the next great wine making region to “re-discover”.
