D'Angelo Aglianico del Vulture Basilicata 2016
Pound. The. Table!! That’s what this fantastic, volcano-born, 90-POINT, southern Italian red had us doing the moment it poured into our glasses last night. THE PRICE!? Wow!!
First off, stash a few extra of these somewhere you won’t find it for a few years. It will age beautifully, and in 2025 you’ll be all “SWEET!” Look what I found!
So, “Vulture” refers to Mount Vulture (an extinct volcano) in Basilicata, Italy where this bad boy hails from, and has become the hottest (as in, sommeliers and Italian wine aficionados are all over it) region of Italy in recent years for powerful, fascinating, deliciously drinkable and ageable wines. Grown in the rich, volcanic soil, we think D’Angelo’s 2016 (that great vintage again) is EXTRA drinkable -- a seriously lip-smacking, savory, brightly juicy and spicy red...it demands pizza or something delicious with it...
Think laser-pure, uber-zesty cherry and raspberry, super crisp and juicy, then a deep savory layer comes in with tummy-rumbling woodsmoke (which is a trip, as this wine is aged in large neutral barrels) and sweet, savory herbs...MMM! It’s got lovely balance, and just packs in a ton of flavor and length. CRAZY good pound-the-table stuff at this price!! Only so much to go around though...did you see our PRICE?!!
The DOC entry wine of Casa Vinicola D’Angelo is Aglianico del Vulture, a delicious red to enjoy to the very last sip. In the first years, this Aglianico wine may appear a little vivacious or even sharp, however, over time, as it refines in the bottle, it becomes more mellow and harmonious.

About The Producer
“No wine can be a great wine without its local culture.” We cannot think of better words to describe our approach: tradition, authentic winemaking culture and unique vineyards, all handed down the D’Angelo family for several generations. Wine is about emotions, tradition, culture, love and passion. For almost a century now, the D’Angelo family has been widely recognised as a pillar of Basilicata’s wine tradition. Although the company was formally set up in the 1930s, its wines were first exhibited at the 4th edition of the Bari Trade Fair (1924). A journey into the world of winemaking that spans over four generations of the D’Angelo family, all the way to Erminia and Rocco, the current owners. The family history goes hand in hand with the success of Aglianico del Vulture, which, aside from becoming a symbol of Basilicata, it is increasingly being appreciated and enjoyed in the entire country. Between 1924 and 1950, the company specialized mostly in the sale of wine in bulk and grapes, however, in this period, it also introduced its very first wine under the “Casa Vinicola D’Angelo” name. A few years later, the company changed its core business to become a fully-dedicated wine producer, making only bottled products under its own brand by 1950.
Pairing Suggestions
It goes very well with all meat courses and flavourful or not too sophisticated dishes.
