Bordeaux! Bordeaux! No, you’re not seeing double…we’re doubling up! Two Margauxs, both alike in dignity, in fair Bordeaux, where we lay our scene…

Apologies to the Bard himself, but for an offering this epic…I just had to go with Shakespeare! This is a world-breaker, folks. When…just WHEN do you ever see wines from a Grand Cru, Second Growth, or Margaux producer at a price anywhere near this deal? Never, that’s when. C’MON!!!

Ok, deep breath. The historic Chateau Durfort-Vivens stayed in the same family, passing down from one generation to the next over SEVEN CENTURIES!! Eventually, in 1961, they were snatched up by a neighboring chateau you just might have heard of… THE Chateau Margaux! So yeah, good things working here, I would say (understatement of the year, me thinks?)! Bordeaux connoisseur Thomas Jefferson (third president of the U.S. too, but never mind that…) considered this chateau a TOP-FOUR Bordeaux estate… ranked just after Lafite, Latour, and Margaux! How’s that for an ace up the sleeve?!?!

We’ve taken leave of our senses, offering two Margaux bottlings from this spectacular left bank chateau for HALF of what these wines fetch on the open market! 2019 is the first release of these wines, as the Lurton family had switched over to organic and biodynamic farming a few years back and the various vineyard sites suddenly expressed nuances that would be wasted in the typical “second wine”... enter these two site-specific beauties from the same plots that make the Grand Vin each year! Furthermore, it’s not like we’re offloading some inferior vintage, either. 2019 was EPIC! James Suckling praised the vintage for its “Harmony, balance, and freshness” – characteristics both of these wines have in plentiful abundance!

Le Plateau – the “generous” one – 65% cabernet sauvignon and 35% merlot… this is plush, rich blackberry and cherry cola notes with depth, purity, and sensuous warmth. A structured, refined showstopper that offers up opulence and elegance in true Margaux fashion. Grown west of the village of Soussans at the northernmost part of Margaux in deep, sandy, and gravelly soils, this is power and grace to fill your belly and warm your heart.

Le Hameau – the “energetic” one – 59% cabernet sauvignon and 41% merlot… this is bright, lively, and fresh with tightly wound red raspberry and mulberry, roasted herbs, and a pristinely clean finish. Grown in the village of Cantenac on deep, rocky soils, this is lift and prettiness, with plenty of character revealed over time.

Just like Shakespeare’s most famous star-crossed lovers, we just couldn’t break these youthful beauties apart! These are each spectacular wines and fully capable of standing alone and impressing the hell out of any Bordeaux lover…but together! They offer a unique understanding of Margaux’s fabled terroir, with differences celebrated and commonalities binding in the most romantic of ways. I’m tearing up just thinking about it. TWO-FOR-ONE, y’all!!! Don’t miss this!

The 2019 Dufort Vivens is a brilliant Margaux, unwinding in the glass with aromas of blackberries, licorice, sweet soil tones, spices and rose petals. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a fleshy core of fruit, rich, powdery tannins and a lively spine of acidity, it concludes with a long and penetrating finish. The blend is dominated by fully 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, which lends the wine immense nobility. Anyone who isn’t aware of just how good Gonzague Lurton’s wines are these days should taste a bottle. Best after 2027.

About The Producer

The Durfort property dates back to the 12th century having been owned by the influential Durfort de Duras family for seven centuries. The family also owned the nearby Château Lamothe, later renamed Château Margaux. The property was purchased in 1824 by M. de Vivens, and renamed Château Durfort Vivens.

In the 20th century, the château was purchased by local négociants, and in 1961 it was purchased by Château Margaux, which was controlled by the Lurton family, which also owns Château Brane-Cantenac and Château Climens. Until that time, the wine was produced at Château Margaux.

Lucien's son Gonzague Lurton, became the head of operations 1992.
