Fromm Winery Pinot Noir Cuvee H 2019
From the land of the Kiwis, the land UNDER the land down under, where sheep outnumber people 11 to 1 and the fearsome All Blacks reign supreme (except when Ireland comes to town!) comes this 96 POINT (plus at least two more 95 scores) flagship pinot noir from the northern tip of the southern island. 55% OFF for this organic, dry-farmed, tete de cuvee of the best single vineyard sites in Marlborough… Are you kidding me?
First off, I know, I know, New Zealand pinot noirs and sauvignon blancs are everywhere these days. For the most part, they’re cheap, they’re simple, they’re well made, but whole-ly UNCOMPELLING. Well, NOT TODAY! And not by a long shot! POW! KABLAM! This wine punches like Batman in the comic books. One sip and the stars are circling my head. $29 for a wine like this? INSANITY!
Fromm’s top blend, “Cuvee H”, is an homage to their long standing winemaker, Hätsch Kalberer. He got it all started, partnering with Switzerland native George Fromm back in the late 80s, eventually opening up Fromm in 1992. Hätsch has been at the helm ever since, crafting wines that showcase a Burgundian style applied to the cool climate and rich soils of Marlborough. This wine steps up and challenges the very best of the grape, with its own intimidating Haka (you’ll want to see this after you order your case) of powerful aromatics, savory complexities and silky, velvety finish. This wine STOMPS with black cherries and crushed rose petals, sweet raspberries, and a stroll across the damp pine forest floors of the Pacific Northwest. The wine is elegant, but MEATY, with savory and mineral notes building through into a complex finish that will easily stretch out over the next decade plus.
This is one of the finest examples of New Zealand pinot noir to be found in the U.S., but as you might guess… there is not enough to go around! Do what you must, get all that you can and you’ll be set on NZ pinots…for a little while, at least! 55% OFF, my friends!
Beautiful, dark Pinot colour, nice density but still positively transparent. The nose opens with dark red fruit aromas, lifted by some primary, floral sweetness, combined with forest floor underbrush notes and a subtle hint of tar, typical for this terroir.

About The Producer
Georg Fromm and Hätsch Kalberer met in the late 1980s and decided to create FROMM Winery. The first vines were planted under the guidance of our Swiss founder, Georg Fromm. Years later, in 1992, after the talking became planning, and the planning became planting, FROMM Winery officially started with its very first harvest.
Since then FROMM Winery has built an international reputation by producing an array of outstanding wines that reflect both European style and Kiwi ingenuity.
The Fromms returned to Switzerland in 2008 but the winemaking team continues to make Pinot Noirs that truly show the expression of the soil, Syrah co-fermented with Viognier, and we can proudly say that FROMM has the oldest single vineyard Malbec in New Zealand.
Today the passion for wine continues, now under the careful eye of old family friend and owner Pol Lenzinger, co-owner Stephan Walliser and Swiss business partner George Walliser. Georg Fromm has moved his focus back to his family winery in Malans, Switzerland.
