Celler Piñol Mather Teresina Terra Alta 2019 - Last Bottle

Celler Piñol Mather Teresina Terra Alta 2019

96 POINT, hyper-floral, juicy, crazy-delish GARNACHA blend from 60-70-year-old vines, at some high-elevation (1500+) vineyards about an hour southwest of Barcelona – a dash of 20% cariñena, and the extremely rare morenillo grape at 10% to make it extra-rocking. OVER 50% OFF with our incredibly drop-your-wine-glass price!

Cellar Piñol is a pioneering winery of this area in southern Catalonia, with a stellar reputation both locally and internationally for consistently quality wines (not to mention some of my favorite food in the world!!!). This wine highlights the extreme potential of the Spanish Mediterranean for making high-toned, structured, and long-lasting reds that deliver way, WAY above their price point! UNDER $40 for this is a STEAL, and I bet if this was a Southern Rhone estate with a bit of history, the scores would creep a bit higher still! 96 POINTS with an asterisk, I say, but regardless – this is a wine you simply have to taste to believe!

We tasted this a couple months back, and the wine got stunning reviews across the board from our buying team – “super juicy and fruity” said one, “nice red fruits with a hint of spice and a bit of structure to back it up” said the other, and of course, me bringing it home with that extra panache – “Hibiscus and red berry fruits, pomegranate molasses, blueberries, iron ore, rooibos tea, juicy, searingly bright, nicely tart, and simply rocking with an elegant and structured finish!”

Not much to be had, and you can’t find this anywhere near this price here in the USA…get more than you think…you’re gonna LOVE this!

** I spent several weeks in college living just south of here, halfway between Valencia and Barcelona. What a life! Fireworks every night, siestas every afternoon, fantastic food, and a slow, peaceful pace to daily living. And the PAELLA?!?! Those Spaniards have it right… **

Celler Piñol is located in one of Spain’s hidden gems. Terra Alta is the southernmost region in Catalonia, right on the border of Tarragona. The Piñol family are winemaking pioneers to these Spanish highlands.

About The Producer

The family’s winemaking origins begin with great-grandfather Arrufí, who made wine for home consumption from vineyards around the village of Batea. Their winemaking efforts took off in earnest with the marriage of Arrufí’s daughter, Teresina, and Juan Piñol. Together, Juan and Teresina established Cellar Piñol, and led production from the 1940’s to the 1990’s, eventually passing the winery along to their daughter, Josefina. Under her direction, Celler Piñol soared. Josefina expanded the cellars and released the winery’s first commercial vintage in 1995. Today, the fourth generation of Piñol winemakers are guiding the estate, along with famed wine consultant Toni Coca, and head winemaker Cristina Borrull, who joined Celler Piñol in 2018.
