Your humble scribe’s first real jaw-dropping, epiphany-level wine ever, at the tender age of 23, was an aged Sauzet Meursault. The world around me wobbled, the Matrix revealed itself. A life-changing moment that defined my whole life, really. Now, that wine was probably $300 back then, and I’m not going to tell you this Bourgogne will do that to you, but I can say that it HOOKED ME, hard, forever. And so, I must have it on hand, always. THIS noble baby is a TREMENDOUS no-brainer for you Chardonnay lovers – insanely priced, drinking perfectly, impressive yet casual enough to drink at will, daily. Let’s go!!

Maison Roche de Bellene is the négociant label of Nicolas Potel, the well-known and highly regarded winemaker in Burgundy. Founded in 2009, the emphasis at Roche de Bellene is on individual terroirs from vieilles vignes (old vines – 40 years or older) that are farmed responsibly. All of the growers that Nicolas works with are either certified organic or farming according to the principles of lutte raisonée (“sustainable viticulture”). While there are dozens of bottlings, the “Bourgogne” is a “house blend,” if you will, and has received much praise from the critics for over a decade, given its accessible pricing vs. scores and overall high-quality. 

So it was with great joy to have tasted this a while back and successfully purchased some (albeit not enough…), two cases in my little wine stash, thanks very much. 

EXPECT: the best lemon pie you ever had. Your Mom’s, that one at your favorite restaurant, or the one you made from your own lemon tree, this beauty TRILLS and sings and POPS with multi-layers of said lemon pie. There’s crunchy orchard fruits, peaches, honeysuckle, and a dash of baking spice….and it’s all beautifully, even RICHLY textured, coating your palate with oily Chardonnay yet also leaving you fresh and exhilarated. NINETEEN BUCKS — are you serious?!!
