It’s our BIRTHDAY! Yes…we celebrated yesterday…so?!?! We’re HUGE believers in milking your birth month for everything it is worth — so we’re keeping this party rolling with a STUNNNING 94 POINT Special Club Champagne at a cray-cray price! And you can’t get this ANYWHERE else!  

Not here to brag…but I made this! My first EVER Special Club!!! Ok, I wasn’t there when the grapes were harvested, and I never touched the fermentation, and I certainly wasn’t allowed anywhere near the bottling line — but…BUT! I did arrive early to the winery one morning back in November to meet with Damien Goulard, to tour the vineyards and immaculately clean cellar, before sitting at a custom oak high table crafted from an old Coquillard press plate presented with 5 BLIND bottles of this cuvée — each with their own dosage added. AND…I was a VITAL part of the illustrious tasting panel for this final dosage trial (Damien, your Last Bottle buyer, your Last Bubbles buyer, our beloved translator/broker, and ME…) And…AND…I did fight (successfully) for this 2.5 grams per liter, EXTRA BRUT dosage for the final bottling — so, yeah…I basically made this. And guess what? IT RULES!!! 

As if Special Club could get any more special, am I right?! We bought every…last…bottle of this ULTRA-FINE 2018 vintage Special Club (probably why Damien invited us to weigh in on the final dosage) and hot DAMN if this doesn’t go down as one of the greatest bubbly purchases in Last Bottle history! If you know me even a little bit, you know I have never…EVER… turned away the opportunity to drink Special Club Champagne. It’s the ULTIMATE stamp of quality in the wine world — always GROWER produced, always peer and expert tasted (blind, mind you…first as a still vin clair wine, then again as a bubbly to ensure it meets the impeccably high standard.) THEN — and only then — does the crème de la crème get bottled, labeled, and sold in that oh-so rare, totally ICONIC Special Club glass. 

This 94 POINT gem of distinguished, age-worthy, and surreally complex Champagne is everything you could want in luxurious and luscious bubbly — from the explosively floral aromatics of star jasmine, chamomile, and wisteria, to the warm, toasty brioche, crunchy oyster shells, and electric cherries galore…YES!!! On the tongue, you are welcomed with even MORE cherries, then golden apples, and sun-ripened apricots, all gloriously accented with slivered almonds, and ginger spice, with tingly pink peppercorns, and this lingering marzipan sweetness. It’s BONE DRY so the acidity is bright, fresh, and percolating — but the texture is creamy, with a hint of orange oil that coats the tongue long after each sip. It’s a wonder, and something easily comparable to those big house Champagne flagships that would cost twice as much…or more!

40% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, and 30% Pinot Meunier — all hailing from Damien’s estate holdings on the prized Massif de Saint Thierry just northwest of Reims, and the most northern region of Champagne. Chalk and sandy clay are de rigueur up here, and the cooler climate lends itself to some seriously fascinating, extraordinarily complex Champagnes — just…like…THIS!!! We couldn’t have dreamed of a better Birthday Bubbly to share with y’all — and remember, I made this, so you know it’s good!

Damien and his team get full credit…but getting to partake…not just in a dosage trial for Champagne…but for SPECIAL CLUB Champagne, and actually getting to set the final dosage amount…well, that is just BEYOND! Poor A.I. will NEVER get to experience something like THAT!**

Ripe apple character builds with chamomile floral notes, and takes a hearty, lush turn on the mid-palate featuring cherry and cherry pit notes, even, surprisingly, slivers of dark chocolate-covered almonds, and finishing with a wet slate and pulverized stone mineral quality." -Decanter
