ALMAVIVA, here…we…come!!! Does your mouth water when someone mentions Concha y Toro? Do you dream of tasting Mouton-Rothschild? Would you leap out of your chair and weep to discover that several decades back — on the heels of a successful synergistic maelstrom where Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild joined forces to create the legendary OPUS ONE — the Baroness Philippine de Rothschild made the same sort of magical marriage in South America?! Joining the ICONIC Concha y Toro powerhouse, with the majestic vinous bloodline of the Rothschild family…I give you…ALMAVIVA!!!

A single, ground-breaking château model — the first of its kind in South America — with a Grand Vin forged from a single vineyard high up in the Andes foothills, in the Puente Alto region of Chile’s famed Maipo Valley. This is Shangri-La for Bordeaux grapes — with red, sandy loam soils set above 2,000 feet in elevation…not unlike the very peak of Napa’s iconic Pritchard Hill. Cabernet Sauvignon takes center stage with over two-thirds of the final blend, then joined by the so-called 6th grape of Bordeaux — Carménère — which has found a new home in the steep foothills of Chile these past several decades. Cab Franc and Petit Verdot round everything out, and the final tally is absolutely EVERYTHING you would expect from the powerhouse coupling of two winemaking LEGENDS.

I mean, just read the 98s, 97s, and more below! “A real head-turner” and “a stunning example of Almaviva” that delivers “a classy, harmonious wine” — and those are but a few of the highlights! This beauty AND a beast absolutely PURRS, and the precision, the elegance, the power, and the depth — it’s a balancing act achieved with uncommon grace, y’all. Cassis and kirsch, with brooding and dark notes of sappy plums, baked cherries, black currants, vanilla bean paste, fennel, toasted walnuts, and iron ore…HUZZAH! Viscous and bold, this flows slowly over the palate, with impressive staying power. The finish is long and very, very plush. Like a 16-pound bowling ball wrapped in velvet. NOT FOR THE SHY and devilishly hedonistic in a Napa Cult Cab sort of way, but with a unique and gorgeously integrated green note that gives this complexity and the promise of decades worth of aging potential. It slays…full stop.

To have a shot at this…at the BEST PRICE on the planet?! Welcome to no-brainer junction, population…YOU!!! (And me, and the entire team of buyers that already scored a few bottles for our personal collections.) Get some while we got it, people!

Go, go, GOOOOO!!!!

"A fresh and discreet Almaviva with subtle pencil shavings and cigar box to the cassis and hints of chili chocolate and peppermint. Nuanced and subtle on the nose. This is medium-bodied and subtle on the palate with silky tannins in the seamless finish. Very long. 71% cabernet sauvignon, 22% carmenere, 5% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Drinkable now, but it will take its time to deliver complexity." ~James Suckling

"Crafted by Michel Friou from a legendary vineyard in Puente Alto, this is a precise red blend that balances opulence with elegance. The nose delivers blackcurrant, cherry, redcurrant and liquorice aromas with hints of violets, eucalyptus, spice, and pencil shavings. Fleshy, with a juicy, energetic core and polished tannins that promise ageing potential. A classy, harmonious wine. A blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Carmenère, with dashes of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it was aged for 20 months in new French barrels." ~Decanter

"A stunning example of Almaviva, shot through with the generosity and restrained spice of Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmanère in Puente Alto. Coffee bean, liquorice and cocoa set the tone on the opening beats, showing the restrained glamour that the partnership of SA Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Concha Y Toro do so well. Plenty of fruit here, majoring on blackcurrant and damson, with just enough brambled blackberry buds and autumn hedgerow adding a welcome note of both bitterness and fragrance, cutting through the sleek ripeness of the palate, excellent reflection of the balanced weather in the 2021 vintage, with no challenging heat spikes." ~Jane Anson

"The 2021 Almaviva leads with a lively bouquet centered around black fruits, sweet tobacco, fresh herbs and well-integrated, high-quality oak. The palate is precise and coiled, finishing with a delicious combination of expansive, juicy sweetness framed by structured, finessed tannins that gradually gain grip with aeration. The seductive style at Almaviva dovetails very nicely with the effortlessness of this vintage, offering a darker, more open-knit drinking experience than the comparatively buttoned-up, red-fruited 2022. This is accessible now, but an additional two or three years in the cellar is recommended." ~Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"A real head-turner, this detailed and nuanced red opens with notes of Mexican spiced chocolate and crème de cassis before revealing a sleek yet rich core, which is built around pepper and graphite-laced berry, cassis and damson plum flavors that fan out around fresh acidity. Features taut but well-integrated tannins, crescendoing harmoniously with elements of molasses and cocoa. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2043. 15,000 cases made, 2,400 cases imported." ~Wine Spectator

"The 2021 Almaviva is a blend primarily based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere, but not limited to these, and was aged for up to 18 months in French barrels. Its color is garnet with a purple sheen. The enticing nose showcases blackberry, cassis marmalade, black and green pepper, ashes, camphor and cigar box aromas. Indulgent and rich on the palate, it carries taut, fine-grained tannins, velvet texture and balanced acidity, leading to a long, ripe finish. This bold and layered red wine reveals nuanced depth and richness on the palate, promising further development as it matures in the bottle." ~Vinous

"Producers in the Puente Alto region of the Maipo Valley craft magnificent Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines. This elegant red boasts fine tannins and a complex profile of aromas and flavors. The nose reveals notes of cigar box, berries, and white pepper, leading to delicate hints of thyme, paprika, and chocolate-wrapped berries on the velvety palate. As the flavors linger, subtle notes of cedar emerge in the finish. Enjoy this wine now through 2040." ~Wine Enthusiast
