Ok, I might have outed my utter nerdliness just there…who cares! The estate’s final blend “normale” that this TOP SECRET, in-the-cut bottling was born from has already earned TRIPLE 94 POINTS from top critics (and sells for anywhere from $64 to $89 here in the USA)  — but in the bountiful, absolutely CLASSIC growing season like 2019, and with a sales window coming in the dusty aftermath of a global pandemic, the winery quietly asked if we might be interested in bottling about 400 cases of this under our globally famous Sleeper label…and after one single sip from the barrel — how…could…we…NOT?!?! This stuff SLAYS, y’all — with the deeply saturated earthiness only truly great Brunello possesses, and then that carefully ripened fruit character, brought to vivid, brilliant life with the perfect infusion of spice, florals, and herbaceousness…just DANG!!!

The juice here is an estate-grown blend of several different vinifications of Sangiovese from different plots of their two prized vineyards that stand on opposite ends of Montalcino — one to the northwest, the other, to the southeast. The northwest plot sits isolated amongst the cooling forests of holm oaks and Mediterranean scrub brush, while the southern parcel is one of the great Brunello plantings in the revered Castelnuovo dell'Abate sub-region. The estate did a full-blown clonal study several years back, isolating 120 different clones of the grape, and testing over the years until they whittled it down to the four best clones for their soils and climate…that’s some serious work — and just goes to show the level of precision, dedication, and care you can taste in every…single…SIP!!! 

One word…BROODING! This is a big boy, no question — and you’d be wise to let it breathe for a few minutes (and up to a few hours) before consuming every last inky and compelling drop! It opens with volcanic earth, and spice fig compote, brandied cherries, and a bevy of roasted Mediterranean herbs. But with time and air, some serious Archimedeian Alchemy transforms this beast into a luminous and shining beauty. Strawberries, and plums, with rose petals, and camphor, Rooibos tea, and cedar, and blood orange peel, and rosemary, and…AND!!! Its bright acidity pierces the intense structure like high beams in the darkness, but the unfathomable depth and substance keeps this chugging along like a 1978 Mercedes-Benz 300 diesel.
